Fact: Greenpeace targeted Energy Transfer’s business constituents with misinformation.
Along with the misinformation that Greenpeace systemically distributed to the media, general public and their followers, Greenpeace also engaged in a targeted campaign with Energy Transfer’s business constituents, seeking to harm existing relationships and terminate contracts.
Greenpeace and others sent a letter to Equator Principles Association, a group of global banks that included lenders to Energy Transfer, containing misinformation. The letter stated that “harm to native areas” had “occurred when DAPL” had “deliberately desecrated documented burial grounds and other culturally important sites,” which is false.
As a result of these false claims, in addition to subsequent letters containing similar allegations, lenders sold equity in Energy Transfer, as well as shares of their Dakota Access Pipeline loans, categorically hurting the company.
